Senior Cat Care
February 15, 2021

Do you have an aging kitty on your hands? Cats are adorable at any age, but they somehow become extra lovable as they grow older. By the time Fluffy reaches her golden years, she’ll likely be a very calm, easy pet, whose daily agenda mostly contains naps and cuddles. A Raleigh, NC vet discusses senior cat care below.

Litterbox

One thing you can do to keep your pet comfortable is to get her a litterbox with low sides. This will be easier for her to get in and out of.

Beds

Our feline pals spend a vast majority of their lives practicing their sleeping skills. Older furballs are master nappers, capable of snoozing up to 20 hours a day. Make sure Fluffy has lots of comfy beds!

Playtime

Kitties are hunters by nature, and just can’t resist pouncing and batting at things. Take a few minutes a day to play with Fluffy. This will be good for her both physically and mentally. (Plus, it’s adorable.)

Safety

Senior cats are in a lot of danger in the Great Outdoors. One concern is that they sometimes can get forgetful. This can make them prone to getting lost, as they can forget how to get home. Plus, Fluffy may not be able to escape potential threats, such as cars or stray dogs. Keep your furball safe and sound indoors!

Grooming

Kitties are very good about keeping their fur soft and clean. However, Fluffy may have trouble with this as she grows older. Help her out by brushing her gently. This is also a good way to spend some quality time with her.

Veterinary Care

Your vet may recommend bringing your feline friend in more often as she ages, so her health can be closely  monitored. Many medical issues that older cats face are manageable. However, catching and treating them early can make a huge difference. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Climbing

Fluffy may have a hard time jumping up to her favorite spots. Help her out by setting out footstools and ottomans for her to use as steps. Or, better yet, just get actual pet stairs.

Purrs

A big part of caring for your older cat is just keeping that little motor going. Pay lots of attention to Fluffy, and make sure she feels loved!
