Keeping Kitty Cool
July 15, 2021

Temperatures often soar at this time of year. People often cool off with a cold snack, or perhaps by going swimming. For cats, beating the heat can be a bit trickier. Fluffy is wearing a fur coat, after all, and can easily overheat. Read on as a local Wake Forest, NC vet offers some advice on keeping your feline pal comfy in the heat.

 Water

Making sure that your feline friend is staying properly hydrated is absolutely crucial in summer. If you have more than one kitty and/or a large house, set out a few water bowls. Fluffy may also enjoy a water fountain.

Brushing

Brushing Fluffy will help get dead fur and dander out of her coat. This will in turn help keep her cooler. This is also a good way to make your furry little diva feel pampered!

Freedom

We don’t recommend letting cats go outside at all. However, we really advise against letting kitties out in extreme weather. Keep your furball indoors, in rooms with fans or air conditioners, as much as you can.

Cats, as you may have noticed, are really, really good at finding comfy spots. Chances are, Fluffy will naturally seek out the coolest rooms to lounge about in. You may find her sprawled out on the kitchen or bathroom floor, or even in the cellar. These spots naturally stay cool. Just take care not to accidentally lock her into a room or shed!

Cold Treats

Who says cats can’t have something cool on a sweltering day? Keep your feline buddy’s canned food in the fridge for her. You can also offer Fluffy some tuna and tuna juice over shaved ice. Or, keep some squeezable treats in the freezer for her.

Beds

It’s no coincidence that hammock beds are so popular on islands. They’re much cooler than regular beds, because air can flow beneath them. Make your furry pal her own hammock by attaching a sturdy piece of material to the legs of a table or coffee table. If you really want to spoil your kitty, put a frozen towel on her bed. You can also point a fan at or over it. You’ll just need to make sure that Fluffy can’t knock it over onto herself.
