Ways To Beat Litterbox Odors
January 15, 2022
Cats make wonderful pets: they’re cute, cuddly, lovable, and extremely entertaining. Of course, there are also some downsides to having a kitty. The litterbox is probably the biggest one. It’s great not to have to walk your pet, but, well, her private bathroom doesn’t exactly smell like roses. We can help! A Raleigh, NC vet offers some suggestions below.

Air Fresheners

It’s probably not a huge surprise to find these at the top of the list. After all, these products are specifically formulated to combat bad smells. The key is to choose something that breaks down scent molecules, instead of just covering them with perfumes. Look for those made for bathroom use.

Cleaning

This isn’t the best part of having a cat, but it is absolutely necessary. We recommend scooping the litter daily, and changing it every week.

Ventilation

Many people choose to put their kitty’s litterboxes in laundry rooms or spare bathrooms. If you do this, make sure there is some sort of ventilation. If Fluffy’s powder room has a window that you can safely leave open, do so when it’s nice enough. You can also get an air purifier. Even small ones can make a difference.

Liners

Litterbox liners and deodorizers can be effective at fighting bad smells. You can also opt for a cheaper version, and just sprinkle baking powder in the litter pan.

Litter Choices

There are many different litters to choose from. Some do work better than others when it comes to fighting odors. Just let Fluffy have her say. Kitties can be picky about the litters they use! If Fluffy starts avoiding her litterbox, go back to your old brand.

Avoid Overcrowding

Do you have more than one cat? Make sure that each of your furballs has her own litterbox. You’ll also need at least one extra.

Plants

Plants can be very helpful at keeping the air in your home clean and fresh. Just be sure to stick with pet-safe options. You can find a list online at the ASPCA site here.

Diet

What goes into your cat will obviously determine what comes out of your cat. Make sure that Fluffy is eating a good, nourishing food. If her waste is extra stinky, or if you notice her having issues, contact your vet. As your Raleigh, NC veterinary clinic, we are dedicated to offering great care. Call us anytime!
