What are some ways to keep your dog active both indoors and outdoors?
Outdoor games are a lot easier for dogs because we tend to have more space, making activities like throwing a ball or a Frisbee a lot easier. For smaller dogs that might not be interested in these types of activities, general exercise such as walking, going to the park, or taking nature walks can be great options. These activities offer both exercise and mental stimulation. Always ensure your dog is on a leash, but there are dog parks where off-leash play is an option too.
What about indoor activities for dogs?
Indoor activities are a bit different due to space constraints. We don't want to be throwing balls or Frisbees indoors as that could lead to broken items. Games that engage the dog's mental functions are great. Scavenger hunts, where you hide a toy or treat and ask your dog to find it, and puzzle cubes that require the dog to solve puzzles for food rewards, are excellent options. You can also do low-impact activities like tug-of-war with a rope toy. Use a long rope toy to maintain a safe distance between your hand and the dog's mouth, especially important when young children are involved.
How should you handle a young dog that can't be trusted alone at home?
If you have a young dog that is not trustworthy when left unsupervised due to not being fully potty trained or being too youthful, I recommend confining the dog to a crate. A crate is safer than a small bathroom or laundry room, as dogs can easily damage doors or frames in those spaces. Professionally and personally, I suggest crating dogs anytime the owner cannot supervise them. This ensures the safety of both the dog and the home.
What can you do for trustworthy dogs left at home?
If your dog is trustworthy in the home, leave them with activities like a puzzle cube or a toy to chew on, as long as they can handle it safely. Avoid toys that can be completely destroyed or contain small parts that can be swallowed. Know your dog to choose activities they can safely entertain themselves with in your absence.
How should you manage a crated dog in your absence?
When crating a dog in your absence, include an activity that provides mental stimulation and positive reinforcement. A Kong toy is perfect for this. It's a conical, hollow toy that can be stuffed with peanut butter, cream cheese, or dog biscuits. For longer absences, freeze the stuffed Kong to create a "popsicle" for your dog, keeping them entertained and mentally stimulated while you're away.
What could be the reason for an older dog becoming inactive?
As dogs age, they need more time to rest and recover from exercise. Exercise and play should be modified for their age and orthopedic health. However, a declining interest in play can also indicate a medical issue. If your dog is reluctant to play or can only play for short periods, seek medical advice. Consult your family veterinarian or visit us to explore any potential medical reasons for the change in behavior.
