What are the most common eye care issues you typically see?
The most common eye care issues I typically see are conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, cataracts, glaucoma, chronic dry eye, and entropion.
What signs might indicate that a dog has an eye infection?
Signs you might see if your dog has an eye infection include redness, squinting, or discharge.
What are the causes of these eye issues?
There are a lot of different causes for them. Some are genetically related, while others are infectious. They can get viral conjunctivitis. You can also see eye issues from allergies or injuries.
What is the main problem to look for in a dog's eye health?
The main problem to look for would be a sudden vision change. If you were to see that your dog started walking into things or having a hard time seeing, you want to get to your vet as soon as possible because that's going to be the best chance you have of saving vision.
What are other emergency situations related to dog eye care?
Other emergency situations would be if there was a visible scratch or wound on the globe of the eye itself, or if there was an excessive amount of swelling around the eye and you're having a hard time seeing it, and the pet does not want to keep the eye open.
Are certain breeds more at risk for eye conditions?
Small breed dogs, especially brachycephalic ones, are certainly more at risk for some conditions because of their conformation. Their eyes are more prone to getting ulcers or chronic dry eye, and they're also genetically more predisposed to getting glaucoma. Also, large breed dogs and ones that have excess skin and facial folds tend to be more prone to having problems with entropion, which is when the lower eyelid rubs on the eye and causes problems.
