T here’s a pretty important kitty holiday coming up. March 28th is Respect Your Cat Day! It may seem that cats are already pretty good at getting us to respect them. After all, Fluffy managed to convince the ancient Egyptians to treat her as a furry, four-legged deity. Kitties have also taken over a sizable chunk of the internet. However, while your furball would probably love a stocked fishpond, a national holiday, and catnip gardens, showing her proper respect is actually much simpler than that. Here, a Raleigh, NC veterinarian discusses showing your feline overlord proper respect.
Cat Furniture
If it was up to Fluffy, you’d have cat beds, pet towers, and kitty tunnels in every room. This may be a bit much for most people. However, your furball should have some things that she doesn’t have to share.
Good Food
Proper nutrition is crucial to your feline pal’s health. Offer Fluffy the best food you can afford. Ask your vet for specific advice.
Clean Litterboxes
Changing Fluffy’s bathroom isn’t the best part of having a cat. However, it is important. Soiled litterboxes can harbor dangerous germs and bacteria. They’re also unpleasant for both you and your pet. No one likes a dirty bathroom!
Entertainment
Cats are quite independent. Fluffy can stay alone much longer than Fido could. However, she will get bored and unhappy with nothing to do but look at the walls. Provide your pet with plenty of toys to amuse herself with when you’re out. A good window view is also a must.
Attention Done Right
Kitties can be very cuddly, but they tend to want to snuggle on their own terms. Always let your furball choose when she wants attention. Of course, Fluffy may demand attention while you’re in the middle of a zoom meeting, and then ignore you when you’re relaxing in front of the TV. That’s just what cats do!
Conversation
Talking to your kitty is actually one of the best things you can do for her. Fluffy won’t know what you’re saying, but she will know that you’re trying to do something for her benefit.
Veterinary Care
Given the option, Fluffy would probably opt for a nap over a checkup. Regardless of her opinion on the matter, she’ll be much healthier with regular veterinary care.
