Happy Holidays! Are you visiting friends or family members over the next few weeks? If so, your canine buddy would likely be thrilled to accompany you. Fido is definitely much more enthusiastic about travel than Fluffy is! A Raleigh, NC veterinarian offers some holiday dog travel tips below.

Reservations

If you’re staying with friends or family, make sure Fido is welcome as well. You don’t want to find out at the last minute that their complex doesn’t allow dogs. If you’re staying at a hotel, find out about pet fees and deposits.

Prep Work

Make sure that Fido is current on his vaccinations and parasite control. Take copies of his paperwork with you. (Tip: keep electronic copies online, in a spot you can access from your phone.) Microchipping and ID tags are also important.

Packing

Fido will need bedding, food, toys, treats, dishes, a first-aid kit, a spare leash and tie-line, and towels or pet wipes. Bring extra food and medicine, in case you’re delayed. If your canine pal has a sensitive stomach, bring water from home, and transition him slowly. Headed north? Pups with thin fur may need sweaters. Bring some comfort items, such as a favorite toy, to help your pet feel more at ease in a new environment.

The Ride

Fido is always much safer traveling in a crate. Add bedding and toys to make it comfy. If you aren’t sure whether your pooch is prone to carsickness, take him on a shorter trip first. Dogs that get extremely carsick may be better off being boarded.

Go High-Tech

You’ll of course need to stop along the way. There are several apps that are great for this. The Bring Fido app lists dog-friendly hotels, parks, and restaurants, while the aptly-named Dog Park Finder Plus can point you to nearby dog parks. Wooftrax logs the distance you and Fido travel, and donate to charities based on your steps. We also recommend the Red Cross Pet First Aid app. This is good to have even if you aren’t traveling.

Settling In

When you get to your destination, bring Fido for a walk, and let him get the lay of the land. This is a great way to spend some special quality time with your furry best friend! Do you have any questions or concerns about your dog’s health or care? Contact us, your Raleigh, NC animal clinic!
