Happy New Year! It’s safe to say we’re all happy to put 2020 in the rearview mirror. This year, make some resolutions to keep your pet healthy—after all, they’ve been with you through everything! Here are some suggestions from a Raleigh, NC vet.

Feed a great diet.

Your pet should be receiving a high-quality diet that is made specifically for your animal companion’s age, weight, and breed. When they get the proper nutrition through their meals, every body system stays healthy. Also make sure to feed your pet in proper portion sizes so they don’t overeat and risk obesity. Ask your vet for a recommendation on a great diet choice if you’re having trouble choosing.

Exercise your pet regularly.

All pets need their exercise. Get your pet moving on a daily basis—go on walks around the neighborhood, play tug-or-war or fetch with a favorite toy, or romp around on the floor with some catnip. When your pet engages in physical activity, they’re burning calories. That means they’ll stay trim and avoid the health risks that come with too much weight.

Keep up with preventatives and dental care.

Is your pet up to date with vaccinations like distemper and parvovirus? How about pest-control products, like flea-and-tick preventatives and a heartworm medication? And don’t forget to maintain your pet’s dental health by brushing the teeth on a regular basis using a pet-specific toothpaste (never use human toothpaste!) and a pet toothbrush.

If your pet needs vaccinations or pest medications, let your vet know right away. We’re here to help! We can also recommend a quality pet toothpaste.

See your veterinary professional.

Make sure to schedule regular veterinary visits for your animal friend. It’s one of the best things you can do for your companion’s health throughout their life. When your vet examines your pet regularly, they can monitor your pet’s health and catch any concerns early on. That makes for quick treatment and happy results!

Nurture your bond.

This year, make a simple resolution to strengthen the bond between you and your pet. Spend time together, every day—have fun and enjoy life as a pair. The relationship you have with your animal companion is not to be taken for granted!
